An implantable defibrillator is utilized to shock the heart back to a normal rhythm. The defibrillator is similar to a pacemaker in that it is placed under the skin with catheters placed in the heart. The implantable defibrillator is utilized in individuals with life threatening abnormal heart rhythms.
